Writing Galore

In the story, "Of Mice and Men," the protagonist George Milton is portrayed as short tempered, and thoughtful. "So you forgot that already, did you? I gotta tell you again do I? Jesus Christ you're a crazy bastard!" (Steinbeck 4). In this line, it expresses how George is clearly angry at their companion Lennie Small because, they forgot where they needed to go which was the ranch. This shows how George is feisty and short tempered because, instead of calmly telling Lennie where they needed to go, George threw a tantrum by shouting slurs at Lennie like, "...Jesus Christ you're a crazy bastard!" (Steinbeck 4). The reason behind George's anger was that this wasn't the first Lennie forgot something, it occurred numerous times which causes George to become frustrated because, he must always be cared for. In addition, because of Lennie's nature being forgetful and unintelligent it makes George short tempered because, they constantly have to deal with Lennie's ways. However, George isn't just a tantrum throwing chapter they also show kindness in their own way. "You never had none, you crazy bastard. I got both of em' here. Think I'd let you carry your own work card?!" (Steinbeck 5). Although, this line doesn't exactly say kindness because, George still throws jabs (which highlights the short temperedness) at Lennie but, they still care for Lennie. Since, George is aware that Lennie is quite forgetful, they made sure that Lennie wouldn't touch the card because they probably would've lost or forgot it somewhere so, George carried their card for Lennie out of thoughtfulness. The main reason behind, George's thoughtfulness is because of Lennie's disability to be responsible so, George must always think of what to do when Lennie's disability gets ahold of them thus, they must always be thoughtful of how to fill up the spaces that Lennie is unable to do.




Besides, George being seen as short tempered and thoughtful, they are also parent like and astute. To illustrate, "You keep away from Curley, Lennie," (Steinbeck 30). In this line, the events that happened beforehand was the introduction between Curley a character who is cocky and likes to cause ruckus and George plus their companion Lennie. As George observes Curley during the greeting, they notice that Curley was trying to intimidate Lennie possibly because, they felt inferior to Lennie or just wanted to boost their authority so, George came to the conclusion because of that impression Lennie must stay away from Curley. This shows how George is a parental character because, like a parent they always look out for any potential dangers that could harm their children in the same way, George is trying to protect Lennie from Curley potentially endangering them. The reason behind their parental nature is because, Lennie is mentally incapable and can't watch out for themselves. It also coerces George to be astute because, if their not then, it will not only endanger Lennie but, George as well. "George looked sharply at him. "What'd you take outa that pocket?" (Steinbeck 6). In this line, what happened beforehand was, Lennie was trying to find out where their work card by pulling something out of their pocket however, George had it because, they knew that Lennie would probably forget it somewhere. But, because Lennie pulled something out of their pocket George becomes suspicious of what exactly is in their pocket. Similarly, to the suspicion of a parent whose child is hiding something that they're not aware of but, at the same time it was very sharp of George to notice that Lennie took out something of their pocket. Later on, as the scene progresses George attempts to force the truth out of Lennie but, Lennie feigns an innocent act and stubbornly tells George they don't have anything. However, George doesn't fall prey to the act and figures out that Lennie carried a mouse with him. In the same way, a parent would not fall to a child's antics and being smart to unearth the truth. Therefore, George short tempered yet astute and parent like.

In the story, "Of Mice and Men" written by John Steinbeck the time period takes place in The Great Depression. "No mess at all, and when the end of the month come I could take my fifty bucks and go into town and get whatever I want," (11 Steinbeck). In this particular line, it inferences that the time period of the book occurred during The Great Depression because, of the value of money. Fifty dollars was seen as a huge amount of money that could buy whatever desires that a person could ever want however, nowadays with a healthy economy fifty dollars is seen as a mediocre amount. In addition to that, "I hoped we was gonna get a little stake together --- maybe a hundred dollars," (30 Steinbeck). During the Great Depression the income that the laborers received were very minimal and can be illustrated, in the book when the characters thought that a good stake would be a hundred dollars. A hundred dollars to them in the book would mean that they could literally buy anything that they wanted since, in the previous line fifty dollars could quench any cravings they had. However, as The Great Depression passed, although to some one hundred dollars is seen as a lot to some but, in terms of working hundred dollars would not be a stake. In conclusion, The Great Depression was depicted in the story and can be reflected into how little amounts of money were greatly treasured.

Recumbent: Plants that grow close to the ground.

In life, there are always chances. Chances to talk to someone new or something big, like the path that one wants to pursue. And, thats what life is, to take ahold of chances and letting the outcome whether its good or bad unravel itself. However, the thing about opportunities is the risk, the risk that it might not be for the greater good and could end up to be something bitter. Because of that risk most people become fearful of chances since, there is always that possibility of an unfavorable result. In the poem, "A Coney Island Life," written by James L Weil, it portrays that exact idea of chance, and the risk or glory thats attached to it. Throughout the poem, Weil explains this idea by reflecting the chances in life to aspects of an amusement park. By using different components of an amusement park such as prizes it reflects the hidden glory in chances or, how it could be passed up like balloons. However, the author also expresses the feelings of those who do not want to take those opportunities. But, Weil stresses that chances are important because, it will bring them regret. Thus, chances should always be taken because, eventually time will run out and for all the chances that were not taken will leave the person regretful.

Chances, are always present throughout life and in the poem Weil states, "And seen my helium hopes break skyward without me." In this particular line, Weil explains the chances of attaining greatness to a ballon but, it flies away because, it wasn't held onto. Weil utilizes this metaphor, of chances not taken to flying balloons because, many times in life people are afraid of taking a big leap because, of the many risks attached to taking the chances. Since, not every opportunity does not lead to success so, because of that probability people, "play it safe," by letting the chance slip from their hands, like balloons. In comparison, to the next lines, "Now arms filled with dolls I threw so much for." Meaning, instead of being fearful of taking that chance,but taking it, in return, there are "dolls," or awards. What Weil tries to portray is if, the person throws away any fear of the risks that may come along with chances then, there is a possibility of gaining something. All in all, chances are not something, that people should be fearful but, instead embraced because, of the possibility of something great.

However, if people don't embrace opportunities and shy away from it constantly then, soon time will slip out of their hands and only regret will remain. "How many more times round I have.." In other words, the speaker is asking how many more chances they have left before there are no longer, "rounds," or time left for anymore chances to arrive. In this line, the speaker is hinting their regret because, they don't know how much time they left to get ahold of any chances. But, what makes regret bad is because, of the what ifs. The what if, the chance was taken and maybe it could've resulted in something great. But, ultimately what makes regrets so bad, is because of the many possibilities that could've happened but, didn't. "To catch that brass-ring-sun before the game is up.." In this line, it explains the wonder of how much time is left of getting that chance by comparing it to the probability of winning a game. Not only that, the reader can feel the regret in this line because, of the unknowningness of being able to pluck the courage take that chance since there is only so little time left. And thus, in life people must always be aware that if chances are passed up it might lead into regret.

Chances in life are precious because, of the hidden glory that its in it but, if its not taken eventually time will pass and only regret will remain. Chances are ubiquitous in life where they are indirect or direct, there are always opportunities lingering. And, although people could take ahold of that chance at anytime, most of them are afraid because, of the risk. The many risks that are attached to a chance whether it'd be failure, loss, etc creates hesitation in people. However, it is the opportunities that are taken that create success and can be reflected into success or, in the poem, "dolls". Because, of that possibility of glory hidden in every chance, it is stressed that chances should be taken, or else it will expunge any sort of greatness that could've been achieved. And, that could've, what ifs, and maybes of success will only leave regret. And, as time passes the feeling of regret will only grow stronger the more opportunities are shunned. So, as humans it is stressed that all emotions of worry, fear, or hesitation should be let go and to just do it. Just take that chance. Or else, if chances are constantly being passed up eventually there will be none. And there will be no more possibilities of anything good or bad. Thus, to not feel regret, people must gather the courage and grab that chance and maybe, just maybe there will be an award awaiting for them.

The first one meets the requirements and, the second one is just the one that I preferred because, of the simplicity if you were wondering why I had two.
